Pump Mixers International

There’s a time when a Nerd lurks in forums around the web, and in rare occasions he finds a thread with awesome people.

Pump Mixers International is a Filipino DJ group that started as forum regulars.
The forum grew to be a venue for mix sharing, equipment feedback, and eventually became online friends that became Pump Mixers International since Pinoy DJs are all over the planet.

The Interview

PMI will continue to be a group of DJs, Mixers and Music Enthusiasts. We live to create mix. We live to share the music to the world.

The Interview Below..

How Did PMI start and Who Started it?
We started out as forum regulars in TPC’s various DJ threads around February to May of 2010. One day, popong sent a private message to mixmasta proposing to form a group since we already are online friends and share the same taste in mixes. But mixmasta and popong knew that they need another DJ to help out. The next member is iztik21. Then the Triumvate began to Pump it UP!

We then set out on deciding what to call ourselves. We had various ideas until we set out on three letters : PMI (initials for popong, mixmasta & iztik21). Until we settled on Pump Mixers International and officially came out to the world in June 24, 2010.

Then after doing the TPC Collaboration Mix 2010, we then invited rompe and hobie12 to join our team. Gladly, they accepted and after a couple of months, we also sent an invite to digitaldrag who also agreed to join. We ended with an application for junior DJ from CJ.

How old is the group?(or since when since it was formed)
We are existing since June 24, 2010.

How many members does PMI have? (Give also the DJ names/names)
So, here we are :
1 popong – DJ Popong
2 mixmasta – DJ Mixmasta Mykl
3 iztik21 – DJ Harvey
4 rompe – The Destroyer
5 hobie12 – DJ Jet
6 digitaldrag – DJ Digitaldrag
7 CJ – DJ Carlmix
You can check the full dj profiles at our official website.

What is PMI’s purpose? (maybe a short background on what PMI is all about)
PMI came to life to show our taste in mixing and showcase Filipino’s capability in mixing and remixing. We initially intended to form a core group but ended up with more DJ’s and more projects than we first planned. We exist to try to epitomize mixing that make people and events better without being too critical on technicalities. A true DJ for us is someone who the crowd can relate with.

Do you guys frequently Meet up?
Since we first met in Trinoma and had pizza in September of 2010, we managed to meet once a month since then.

Where are the members located usually? (South Luzon, North Luzon, Manila, Visayas, Mindanao etc.)
Popong is in Qatar right now and the rest of us are here in Manila. Although, Harvey is from Cagayan Valley, Carlmix is from Bulacan, Destroyer is from Tarlac and Digitaldrag and Popong are from Laguna, and Mixmasta is from Zamboanga City. That leaves Jet as the lone one to originate in Manila.

What type of Equipment and Software do you guys usually use?
We use different software in live mixing, Virtual DJ, Traktor and Ableton. Production-wise, we also use different software based on the training of the DJ since we started out with different backgrounds and we like to keep it a group secret.

Has someone or did the group members started on Vinyl?
That would be The Destroyer since he has 20 years of DJ experience under his belt. Jet, Popong, Mixmasta and Digitaldrag also has vinyl experience that range from minimal to some.

What are your thoughts about Digital Gears?
Most of our DJs are digital DJs and we are proud of it. We are proud of the DJ gear revolution and we believe that the modern DJ must evolve together with the gears. Currently, the group uses Traktor S4, Numark Mixtrack, Torq Xponent, BCD 2000 and CDJs that incorporate into various mixing software. We plan to add more in the near future.

Are all of you DJs in profession? Or do you have Day jobs?
Funny but none of us are full time DJs. We consist of a nurse, computer shop owner, office employee, call center technical support, web designer, businessman and a student.

Are the Members active DJs?
Active DJs in a sense that we talk/chat everyday, share mixes over the website and are present at every gig opportunity that we are presented.

Where do they play or are they mobile DJs?
We usually play on office events, reunions, friend invitations and contractual bar gigs.

What are the Genres do the group like to use?
We do not stereotype the group with a certain genre and we like to experiment on all genres since we like to broaden the scope of our music. We like to mix genres that relate to people. We like to help people enjoy their day making their media players and IEM/cans more enjoyable to plug into their ears.

Does the Group has a Website?
Yes. We started out in a Facebook through a fan page :
http://www.facebook.com/PumpMixersInternational then later we created this baby : http://www.pumpmixers.tk and finally launched http://www.pumpmixersdj.com/ last March 14, 2011.

Are there Downloads of Mixes in the website?
Yes. We currently have 4 categories : Weekly Top 7, 10 Minute Madness, Partee Mixes, and Pumplified.

Lastly, What are some words you can say to Aspiring DJs out there?
Mixing is a great hobby. Pump Mixers International believes and practices that it is not about the gears used or the technicality of the DJ. It is always about the music and about the crowd. Aspiring DJs just need a great passion for music. It is never about the fame because fame is temporary but music is endless.

Music is life and life is a party, so Pump It UP!
